Current Updates
Sorry for the lack of up-dates, but we had a kidney stone in the family & Henry 's exploring the Caribbean - Ouch!!!
So - this is the deal.
The sporadic splashes are being caused by the trout chasing one of the following:
Smallish (is that a word) Hydropsyche AKA Cinnamon Caddis size16/18
or small bright green Caddis, in size 20/22 or small gray brown caddis. in size 20
Yes, I know their small, but that's what the size of these are !!! -The other possibility for the cause of those splashy rises is Small Blue Wing Olives. The second brood has started earlier this season. Sooo... - small olive emergers in sizes 20/22 will do the trick.
And of course - there are always Midges.
Fish have entered
Summer Mode
Yes - they've submitted themselves to the lowly
Midge Pupa
Yes, I know - you think it's not much fun when the
fish go into "SUMMER MODE"
But it CAN BE !!!
Terrestrials Beetles, Ants, and Inch Worms - Just a note about our little inch worm friends. On a few of the streams the fish hanging on the edges are very aware that these insects are available !!
Always check the stream flows for your favorite streams on the home page, Just click the links to the USGS sites. The stream release can change over night, increasing and decreasing the flows can change the temperatures & put the fish down.
Please note: Things constantly change.
You should figure + or - approx.2 deg.
with Water Temps.
Water temperatures may be different by the time you get to the stream - that's why ......
Henry & I strongly encourage you to carry a thermometer.
Charles @ "The Bedfordsportsman" has once again this year agreed to sell stream thermometers at a great discount. Sooo .... it pays to buy one - if you don't own one.
The reality is : if you end up fishing water - where the temps are near 70 deg.
two things occur -
1. Fish are more apt to become lethargic - (they don't eat much) - You don't catch much.
2. If you do manage to catch a trout - you may kill it because - the warmer the water, the less oxygen it can hold.
Due to stress, after the fish is released; they're unable to extract enough oxygen to breath !!!
Stream Temps are as follows: Stream temps are still close to these #'s
East Branch Croton River:
Bath Tub 59 deg.
Cemetery Pool 61deg.
Croton Falls 62deg.
West Branch Croton River:
Upper west branch -58 deg.
Upper end Seminary Rd. 58 deg
Lower end - in Croton Falls 202 - 60 deg.
Titicus Reservoir Outlet: 48deg.
Amawalk - Lower end: 60 Deg.
Way down below are some shots
of current active insects.
But for Now

If you take a little time to poke around, you'll discover just how much there really is available to the trout.
Unfortunately - we tend to allow ourselves to become narrow minded when it comes to what trout are looking for:
